Reading Time: 2 minutes

At the end of Matthew 6, Jesus tells a gathered crowd not to worry about money, food, and clothing. He instructs them to “seek first his kingdom and his righteousness…” and “not worry about tomorrow.”

Jesus reminds us that our worries can add up and draw our focus away from God. At the same time, he emphasizes our value. We are important to him. Because he loves us, he will take care of us.

There is comfort in these words, yet there is also a challenge. Even in the best of times, life’s necessities can occupy our minds. These days, with the cost of living snowballing, the basics can be a significant source of worry.

For many people leaving prison, accessing food, clothing, and other basic needs can create stress and frustration, an obstacle in their path to recovery and reintegration.

When we meet the practical needs of people in prison and on parole, we help ease this burden and make room for someone to take a wider perspective, to think about their faith, education, work, and relationships. When we offer holistic support, we participate with God in meeting somebody’s basic needs. What an honour and blessing!

As the leaves change and Thanksgiving draws near, I consider the things I am grateful for. My family, of course, and my faith. Yet I am also thankful for the work we do at M2W2, serving people, encouraging them and empowering them, helping them meet their basic needs and, at the same time, giving them the opportunity to look ahead and find meaning and purpose.
