August 10 is Prisoners’ Justice Day.

Across Canada, people in prisons are fasting and refusing to work. This is a show of solidarity with those who have died while incarcerated.

Today we remember the men and women who have lost their lives needlessly in prisons, including Ron Sinclair, Jennifer Churchill, David Prince, and many others.

We also reflect on the disproportionate numbers of Indigenous and Black Canadians who are incarcerated, as well as other minorities, and recognize the systemic racism and injustices that exist in our country.

Together, let’s seek unity and healing, and act always with compassion—never condemnation.
